History of Kannus
The municipality of Kannus was founded in 1859. Before that Kannus was a part of the municipality of Lohtaja. In 1934 Kannus burned down, and only the area of Mäkiraonmäki and the church remained. Kannus received the status of town in 1986. Kannus has a population of approximately 6000.
Pouttu Ltd, which produces variety of cut meats and sausages, is one of the oldest family companies in Kannus. It was established in 1938.
The best-known historical person from Kannus is Oskari Tokoi, (1873-1963) who was a politician. The Oskari Tokoi Museum in Mäkiraonmäki is dedicated to his life-long work. Today`s well-known persons from Kannus are Esko Aho (former Prime Minister, 1954-) and Risto Mattila (snowboarder, 1981-).
